Your guitar must be a piece of crap if you can't hammer on with it. Acoustic or not you should be able to do the leads in at least 80% of the lead guitar stuff. Also the rhythm path is great for what you're mention.
No joke tho if you cannot play up to the ninth level lead level with an acoustic I would recommend getting a set up to make it easier to play.
